MENDOCINO Co., 12/15/16 — The emergency winter homeless shelter opened at 1045 South State Street in Ukiah on Dec. 15, at 5pm. The shelter will provide a sleeping space for 42 people to get out of the weather, during these coldest and wettest months of the year. Registration and intake for the shelter will happen between 5pm and 7pm every day at Plowshares, the soup kitchen at 1346 South State Street in Ukiah. Registration will not take place at the shelter.
The shelter will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, rather than on the basis of a vulnerability index, as was the case last year at the location on Mazzoni Street at the north end of Ukiah.
The building got its final inspection at around 4pm on Dec. 15th, clearing it for use. About thirty people slept there the first night.
We will update with a full story as more information becomes available. You can also read our previous coverage of the emergency shelter.
