CLOSURE EXTENDED thru Thursday, Oct. 18, 8 am to 4 pm.
Closed today from 8 am to 4pm.
Full closure of Route 175 is needed for recovery of an over length semi-truck that went over the embankment last week. The truck’s load of plywood is being recovered today and tomorrow.
MENDOCINO Co., 10/12/18 — Yet, another semi-truck overturned on Hwy. 175, on October 11, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is planning to close the road for the majority of the day, from Monday, October 15 through Wednesday, October 17 to use heavy equipment to remove the truck and it’s spilled load of plywood.
The closure will be during the day, and the highway will re-open at night.
The semi-truck accident occurred on Thursday, October 11, when a truck driver pulling a trailer of plywood continued past multiple warnings signs prohibiting vehicles of that length on the road, and subsequently overturned when the driver was unable to negotiate a turn due to the length of the vehicle.
The closure of Route 175 is planned for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. The plan for that day will be to use heavy machinery to remove the Peterbilt truck. On Tuesday and Wednesday, October 16 and 17, CHP will close the road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to remove the plywood.
The accident on October 11 occurred around 1:30 p.m., and remains under investigation. The driver, Christopher Cortez, was unharmed, and drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved in the collision. The CHP incident report notes that that Thursday afternoon was dry and clear, and that “Cortez passed multiple regulatory signs prohibiting any vehicle over 39 feet in length, which he failed to obey. Due to the overall length of the vehicle, Cortez was unable to negotiate the turn in the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll down the embankment.”
There has been more than one accident on Route 175 in recent months, involving vehicles that are longer than allowed on that stretch of road proceeding past signs warning that they are prohibited.
