MENDOCINO Co., 7/20/19 — A 21 year old man was killed in a hit and run accident, Thursday, July 17 near the town of Mendocino. Calum Hunnicutt, who attended Mendocino High School, was struck by a Toyota Tundra at the intersection of State Route 1 and Little Lake Rd. while skating boarding — the driver fled the scene and is still at large.
Hunnicutt was much beloved, and there has been an outpouring of grief from the community. A Facebook fundraiser has been organized to support his family.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) explained in a brief interview today that they have taken a vehicle into evidence as part of the investigation, a green Toyota Tundra, although the search for the driver is still ongoing.
According to the CHP, Hunnicutt was skateboarding west on Little Lake Rd. and a Toyota Tundra was traveling north on the 1. The vehicle struck Hunnicutt in the intersection, causing fatal injuries. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene and has not yet been apprehended. The California Highway Patrol first received notice of the collision shortly before 11 p.m on Thursday evening. The CHP stated today that, “A vehicle has been stored as evidence, but the suspect is still outstanding.”
