MENDOCINO Co., 9/19/19 — This weekend, Mendonesians will be taking action in concert with statewide and international environmental movements: the Climate Strike, on Friday September 20, and California Coastal Clean-Up day, on Saturday, September 21.
Students and residents in a number of Mendocino County places have planned actions on Friday drawing attention to the impacts of climate change, in coordination with international events happening all this week. On Saturday, there are a variety of river and coastal clean-up events planned in coordination with events statewide. We’ve tried to put together a list — let us know if we missed something by commenting here, or emailing [email protected].

Ukiah: There is a rally planned at 12 p.m. outside the Mendocino County courthouse on State Street, and then at 3 p.m. in Alex Thomas Plaza; there will also be a bicycle event with Walk and Bike Mendocino at that time. There may also be a planned walkout by Ukiah High School students.
Covelo: Meet at 1 p.m. at the Farmers’ Market, then a march through town.
Fort Bragg and Mendocino: Rallies planned from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. In Fort Bragg, on Main Street at Town Hall, and in Mendocino, at Main Street across from Out of This World.
Gualala: Climate Day march and speaker event at the Gualala Community Center. March from 12 – 12:30 p.m.; forums fun from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. featuring a number of speakers. Full flyer included below.
Clean-up events on Saturday, September 21: Statewide event listing can be found at this link. The Mendocino Land Trust has also put together a list of all Coastal Cleanup activities in the county. You don’t need to register in advance, you can just show up. Most events run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Point Arena: Coastal Cleanup day at Arena Cove and surrounding areas; bring gloves! 9 a.m. to noon. Here’s the Facebook page with details.
Ukiah: Russian River clean-up organized by the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District. Meet at Low Gap Park from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; more details at the MCRCD’s website and included in the press release below:
Ukiah Valley Russian River Clean-Up Scheduled for September 21 Volunteers Needed for Annual Pollution Prevention and Stewardship Event
Help your community and help the world! Join clean water enthusiasts from around the globe on International Coastal Cleanup Day to clean the Upper Russian River and its tributaries on Saturday, September 21 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.
Meet at Low Gap Park in Ukiah at 8 am for snacks and to sign in. Come with a team or solo. All ages are welcome. Bring a water bottle, study shoes, and work gloves. No flip flops! A hat, sunscreen, and a walking stick are also recommended.
