UPDATE 4:10 p.m. — Two suspects have been apprehended for allegedly shooting a man on South State Street earlier today. Neither the names of the suspects nor the victim have been released. The victim was airlifted to an out-of-county hospital, likely one with a trauma center. Both suspects were male, one an adult and one a teenager, and authorities are not searching for any other suspects. The man has been booked into county jail.
According to Lt. Cedric Crook of the Ukiah Police Department, UPD received a call at about 12:45 p.m. of shots having been fired. They responded to the 1200 block of South State Street, where they found one victim of a gunshot wound. This man was taken by ambulance to the Ukiah Airport and then airlifted to a hospital. The suspects were seen allegedly leaving the scene in a two-door white Mercedes.
According to Crook, surveillance footage shows that the victim was walking north up State St. and was in front of the strip mall that includes Nifty Thrifty and Sunny’s Donuts, when the car pulled up and immediately someone shot the man. Crook said that the surveillance footage made it seem as though there was “no exchange of words,” prior to the shooting.
Not very long after a deputy with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office located the suspects’ car at an apartment complex in the 2100 block of South State Street, less than a mile down State St. from where the shooting had happened. The countywide SWAT team was called in and the suspects were asked to leave the apartment over a loudspeaker, which they did without incident.
At this time there are no further details on the victim, or his status, except that he is an adult man. It is not known if the victim and the alleged shooters were acquainted. Crook said that he believes there is a “definite possibility this is gang related.”
UPDATE 2:45 p.m. — We’ve confirmed that Grace Hudson Elementary School was placed under lockdown, for about an hour, with the lockdown ending around 2:40 p.m. Parents can now come pick up their children. We will update when we get more info. We cannot confirm that the lockdown was the result of the shooting, but the school is very near to where the shooting took place.
